The ruins of Gothic Okoř castle
Short from the history...
Today´s castle was built in the 14th century by counsellor František Rokycanský. It was rebuilt in late-Gothic style by the Lords from Donín in the middle of the15th century and consequently in Renaissance style by House of Martinic at the beginning of the 16th. It was reconstructed after the Thirty Years´ War and in the 18th century it became a Jesuit college. After the order was abolished in 1773 the castle started to decay, the tower tumbled down at the turn of the 18th and19th century. Since the year 1920 it has belonged to the organization Club of Czech Tourists.
What you can see today...
The dominant feature of the castle are remaindres of a high prismatic tower in the eastern part with the rests of an early-Gothic chapel on the groundfloor. Ruins of a palace are situated close to the chapel in the west. Late-Gothic fortification with a semicircular bastion with key embrasures can be clearly seen up to now in the northern, western and southern part of the castle.
Recommended trail of the trip
1. By train:
a) without change (18 km, 30 minutes)
By a passanger train from the station Slaný (evtl. Slaný -
suburb), direction Středokluky. Stops: Podlešín, Želenice u
Slaného, Koleč, Zákolany, final stop Kováry.
b) with change
By a passanger train from the station Slaný (evtl. Slaný -
suburb), direction Kralupy nad Vltavou. Changing station:
Podlešín. Then by a passanger train direction Středokluky,
stops: Podlešín, Želenice u Slaného, Koleč, Zákolany, final
stop Kováry.
Then walk from the stop Kováry following red touristic signs
about 5,5 km through a valley of Zákolanský creek up to the
ruins of Okoř castle. It is a very nice walk through
picturesque landscape.
2. By car:
From Slaný towards Prague, before entering the highway turn
left, direction Knovíz, then towards Želenice, Třebusice,
Koleč, Zákolany, fter that Kováry and Libochovičky. After 2
km turn left towards Okoř according to a signpost. There is a
large (paid) parking area below the castle. You can also have
some refreshments in a pleasant garden restaurant.
